From a family photo, this painting shows one of my
sons on the beach holding a plastic bucket and looking down at the
beach. Not in the photo are all the images hidden under the sand:
Stalin and Stonehenge; Greeks and Elizabethans; American Indians
and soldiers of the Norman Conquest, just some of the bits of history
that the tide brings in.
This is a very interesting variation of my style where I first outline
and paint realistically a number of images on the smooth canvas.
Then these images are glazed over and the remaining space is built
up to a pebbled surface. Next I paint images over the entire surface
and give them some detailing. The result is a two-layered look,
where the young child stands on a beach looking down at some seashells,
while the viewer also sees what lies under the sand.
