From a family photo, this painting shows one of my sons on the beach holding a plastic bucket and looking down at the beach. Not in the photo are all the images hidden under the sand: Stalin and Stonehenge; Greeks and Elizabethans; American Indians and soldiers of the Norman Conquest, just some of the bits of history that the tide brings in.

This is a very interesting variation of my style where I first outline and paint realistically a number of images on the smooth canvas. Then these images are glazed over and the remaining space is built up to a pebbled surface. Next I paint images over the entire surface and give them some detailing. The result is a two-layered look, where the young child stands on a beach looking down at some seashells, while the viewer also sees what lies under the sand.
