artist's commentary >> buy

There's two simple ideas that motivated this large
painting. First is my belief that anyone, in this case a farmer,
can also be an artist, that is someone who feels a need to make
something permanent that expresses their feelings and beliefs; and
secondly, that artists often use elements from their lives in that
expression. So each of these three farmers is also an artist and
they have used cows or cow parts to express themselves, but importantly,
each one has done it very differently.
One of a number of things I find interesting about my style is how,
once the lines form the structure of the painting, I can use different
painting techniques in the picture and still feel that it really
holds together well. In this painting, the left side has a textured
background with cow shapes scratched into the paint, the center
is painted with thin glazes of color and the right side uses unlined
cow udders floating in the sky like odd-shaped balloons. But even
with that diversity of painting techniques, it holds together well
because of the overall use of the lines.
