artist's commentary >> buy

This picture has a very interesting design. At the
top, there is the arm of God reaching out to touch the figure of
Adam from Michelangelo's fresco on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
The bottom is filled with numerous elements and there is little
in between. But the church steeple pointing towards the spark of
creation of Adam draws the eye down to the classical statue whose
gaze then focuses our eyes back to the bottom left. There, outlined
figures show a great range of our human behavior--good and bad,
creative and destructive, the contradictions of our human nature.
A number of my paintings have references from the art world in them;
this work actually has two references: the hands from Michelangelo's
Sistine Chapel fresco of "The Creation of Adam" and the
Greek statue at the bottom right. Although I'm using these art quotes
very little nowadays, I still feel that when I did, the art references
had immediate impact and carried a message that many people recognized.
Certainly, there is no more well-known representation of the beginning
of human life, as the Bible tells it anyway, than that of the image
of God reaching out to bring life to Adam.
