My father came to the United States from Italy as a young boy and it
was his experience of being an immigrant that inspired this painting.
Both the Renaissance church and statue reflect the Italian heritage
that the immigrant has brought with him. By the way, the statue is a
copy of a Michelangelo sculpture that my father modeled in clay and
cast into plaster, which I inherited.
