On the left side of this divided picture, there's
a Goddess figure
holding our planet, watching over it; on the right, the earth travels
through space alone. It seemed like a basic choice to me and I wanted
to present it in a painting.
The pebbled surface I use in this and other paintings is built up
though many applications of a kind of oil paint called Underpainting
White. This quick-drying paint tends to produce small irregularities.
By painting many layers in different directions, these small
irregularities eventually build up to this pebbled texture. This
surface helped me create some of the fluidity and nuance in the
depiction of outer space in this painting.
Besides this pebbled surface, I have experimented both with very
smooth surfaces, where the Underpainting White is scraped over the
the
canvas with a palette knife and very dense applications, where I
put a
thick coat of Underpainting White on a palette for a number of hours
until it thickens and then use a palette knife to build it into
a very
thick, rough and uneven surface.
