artist's commentary >> buy

The idea for this picture came to me well before 9/11. That idea
was simply to show how searching for God has been one of humanity's
strongest urges. The choice of a New England church was natural
being from Vermont and the choice of the mosque seemed strong architecturally.
Both are places where the search for God takes place.
Looking back after 9/11, I'm pleased that this painting shows both
Christians and Moslems engaged together in the same search; it seems
much more of a similarity between them than a source of conflict.
The
Greek (or Roman) temple, with the fallen head of a god's statue,
adds
an interesting extra historical note to humanity's search.
Many of my works use buildings or something architectural along
with people, perhaps reflecting my stint in college as an architecture
major. After a semester, I switched to major in Fine Arts, partly
because I felt that an artist, unlike an architect, not only gets
to conceive of his creation but also gets to make it with his own
hands, which I felt was an important distinction.
A number of my works also use small people, often in a setting with
much larger images, like the buildings here. Usually, I'll sketch
the small figures on paper, cut them out, put masking tape on them
and try different arrangements of these figures taped on the canvas,
until I find the arrangement I like best.
