Like many people, I have lots of family photographs
in my house. In Personal History, I imagine a person exploring these
photographs to learn more about his family, and in the end, about
himself. The space he's entered moves him along from the soldier
sitting on a tent on the left to the landscape on the right and
then to the large head of the elder woman in the center. Presumably
he could go farther into the scene to view even more family photographs.
In this variation of my style, I create a space and
then set up smaller pictures within that space to move the viewer's
eye along. Its one of a number of ways that I've found to take a
single canvas and in a sense, create multiple pictures that somehow
relate to each other.
This picture also shows how I'll sometime mix color
with black and white. "Our Son, the Astronaut" and "The
Swimming Hole" are two other examples of this particular technique.
