This rather surreal scene features a large giraffe in front of his
companion, a zebra, who is just exiting the forest. Behind them
are a woman and a baby.
The theme of a forest, or as I usually think of it, a jungle, is
one that appears in a number of my paintings, most of them done
after 9/11. The jungle, unfortunately, seems an appropriate image
for the more dangerous times we live in, since the murkiness of
the jungle and the animals that live there create a heightened sense
of danger.
Even so, this particular use of a jungle, has a more comic edge
to it. Neither of the animals, the giraffe or the zebra, have much
danger associated with them; in fact, they don't even look that
realistic since they were painted from African carvings that I have
at home.
"Giraffe" also shows another characteristic of my work,
namely, using figures of various sizes that don't always seem appropriate.
Obviously I'm really not trying to create a realistic scene so appropriate
size is not that important to me. The different size figures often
create a more interesting image.
