I often use my photographs as a resource for my paintings.
In 2000, my wife and I visited our son Tony, who was a Peace Corps
volunteer in the country of Guinea in West Africa, next door to
Liberia, where we had served as volunteers over 30 years before.
Our third day in Tony's village, we were called at 7 in the morning
to a gathering of town elders for them to thank us for Tony's service
and for us to thank them for hosting him and us. After the speeches,
I was asked to take photographs of all of the elders in groups and
several individually. The central figure in this painting was one
of those elders and I loved his very solemn expression. I later
imagined that his figure with that solemnity could represent God
as he surveyed his Garden of Eden, where Adam and Eve have just
disobeyed him and are on their way out.
