In this painting, warriors throughout our long history
of fighting, from an ancient Persian phalanx to a GI from Vietnam,
confront each other in what I imagined to be a final battle to end
warfare. This scene is meant to be a detail of that imaginary final
battle.
Because I use black lines around most images in my work, it makes
it easier to combine figures from various historical times. Although
the figures themselves can be quite different, the common outline
ties them all together, which is beneficial because in a number
of my works I do try to present some historical perspective. In
this painting, showing fighters from over a twenty-five hundred
year period emphasizes our long history of warfare.
