"Bricks" is really two scenes. The small
woman on the right looks out of her window in a brick wall at the
family on the left. That rather strange grouping consists of two-dimensional
man with a realistic face and his wife and child who appear only
as outlines. The three of them are standing near their brick fireplace.
This is an example of the simplest way I can use lines to organize
a picture, that is, dividing it in two parts, in this case creating
separate images of the family on the left and the small observer
on the right. The bricks, the observer's gaze, as well as the use
of the black lines, tie everything together.
This painting also shows how my outlines can act as a kind of shorthand
for showing people. It seems to me that a person's stance shown
by the outline and their face captures a great deal about them.
Two of the people here are only shown as outlines but that still
gives them a strong presence in the work.
