One of a number of pictures I've done featuring heavenly
bodies, this one reflects on how the understanding of our universe
has changed dramatically. Aristotle, watching the astronomer, represents
the ordered universe, which is also shown by the semicircular rings
at the top of the observatory. Within those rings hang numerous
stars and all of the visible planets that the ancient Greeks would
have been familiar with. Above this ordered universe is a less ordered,
more fantastic universe of strangely shaped galaxies that the astronomer
is viewing. Within the astronomer's universe, it is possible to
see galaxies colliding and stars exploding into supernova.
